This was the first book I read that described ‘false eyes’ in a way you could use on sight when looking at a Goban. Chess represents clear battle-lines; with advances and bulwarks defined visually by rank and proximity. Although reading some reviews on it online it seems many people found it rather tough going and didn’t consider it ideal for beginners.
Less than I have read this little book since I bought it new soon after it originally was published.

I’ve since looked at many other beginners go books, and still think this is excellent. Go for Beginners by Kaoru Iwamoto. Instead of going through the rules one by one in an orderly fashion, he uses a sample game to illustrate them.

An excellent introduction to the classic game of go. Second book of Go was my first book after knowing the basics and play some games and I really liked it.
This is a book to which I will return frequently. This was my first go book, and so I owe it a lot for starting off a long time love affair.

This is a very dense read. Nothing too advanced, but it’s heginners of like taking all of Janice Kim’s Learn to Play Go series and stuffing it into one little book. The author shows you a Go problem, the best and worst way to solve that problem and offers you chances to practice the subtle point you just learned. Its topics are also good hints about the broad avenues of further investigation into how Go works. I am not the reader I once was due to disability, but I need not stand on the sidelines.
