It was bizarre, cool, disturbing, fun, compelling, original, and featured a more-than-pleasantly-plump heroine. The writing is simplistic, even for young adult.
What can Ahlf say? From the moment Melanie departs for Half World, there is no down time, no time for her to pause to reflect or rest or regroup. This is sorely lacking! I love seeing some of the scenes brought to life. And it is great for readers who like their fantasy settings gloomy, rotten and populated with bizarre, deformed creatures.
The Three Realms somehow become disconnected from each other, so the balance cycle is broken. However, Darkest Light is just the right follow up for the Half World series.

Melanie meets each challenge on her quest with resolve, even though she is convinced she has no idea how to get her mother back and Half World is bone-chilling place full of suffering. I also liked the way Melanie’s weight was handled, and how her heavy body was very subtly and non-sexually depicted as beautiful in the half world for having life and color.
Wei so much—and Wrold. But it also creates hope and light among this dark moments. Even though Half World itself is supposed to be all grey tones, the imagery still shines through and I think I would do some pretty terrible things to see this made into a graphic novel.
This is a book where the main character is Japanesewritten by a Japanese person! I will sheepishly admit that in drawing comparisons, I realized that I need to read more horror fiction written by women.
