For an African writer it would be very difficult to think of realism and magic as two pillars of the same concept, because the way we feel and think results from the permanent crossing of those frontiers. In fact, the volume reveals much about corruption by both the earlier Coutoo colonizers and their currrent revolutionary African substitutes.

I do think there’s real depth there, but I’m not completely sure that I even made it far below the surface.
Instead we are introduced to a cosmology that astounds and befuddles not only the detective but the reader as well. The people at the fort are all old and puzzling. These elements are very nicely blended together, with the different voices of the specific individuals, the common pressure of the change of time, the pulse of pushing forward to a conclusion, and perhaps the ultimate putting to rest the restless soul of one who died 20 years earlier.
It is very African in ma, style, substance and mood, but the story resonates on a deep universal level. What was there left of that utopia? I just don’t really know what was going on. Not ,ia the whole story, but every sentence of frxngipani original micro-novel is a fable.
It’s short but I still found it a challenge to get through. Like truth, the answer is never simply black nor white. But I passed away along with my name vafanda two decades ago. Refresh and try again. For this book is also an examination of the corruption of individuals, such as Vatsome, and of black society following the revolution.
I just don’t really know what was going on. And this is hope; the hope of life after the death. Its inhabitants reflect the melting pot of different identities – blacks, mulattos and whites — and classes, and the challenge of trying to maintain old traditions and spirit worlds while shedding its colonial past and the violence of war and becoming part of a wider world. It is poetic and magical. When I travel, I like to read books about or written by authors from the location I am visiting. But like any other mystery, everything is still revealed in the end. Para tanto, precisa “remorrer”. But the writing was beautiful.

This book is frwngipani yet featured on Listopia. Our lives are no longer measured by years or seasons. There is magic, talking animals, the dead are all around and the whole story is rather surreal and chronology is pleasingly loose. Alas, as one of the elderly suspects suggests to Naita, “the crime that’s been committed here isn’t the one you’re trying to solve.
